Lawrence (Amos) is born in Groton.
April 22, 1786
Amos Lawrence arrives in Boston in April 1807, works briefly as a clerk, then opens a dry goods store, first at 31 Cornhill (today’s Washington Street) Street and then at 46 Cornhill. With his brother, he forms A & A Lawrence Company in 1814 and goes on to become wealthy importers and textile merchants. Amos Lawrence marries Sarah Richards in 1811 and moves to today’s 148 Tremont Street in 1821.* He serves in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1821), retires from business in 1831, and becomes a philanthropist, giving away an estimated 5/6th of his fortune to cultural, educational, and social welfare institutions. Lawrence dies in Boston on December 31, 1852 and is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery.
